About File Connectors for Enterprise Organizations

File Connectors for Enterprise Pro are built to unlock your organization’s information, making file search smarter, faster, and secure.

You’re able to connect Perplexity’s AI search directly to files stored in leading cloud storage services so you can find answers, compare documents, and surface insights from your team’s files using plain language questions.

Using File Connectors to upload files to Perplexity also ensures that your Perplexity organization always has the latest version of documents, because any changes and updates to your documents will synchronize automatically in Perplexity.

Third-party apps supported

Currently, Enterprise Pro users can connect the following online storage services to Perplexity:

  • Google Drive

  • Microsoft OneDrive

  • SharePoint

  • Dropbox

  • Box

These connectors enable Perplexity to search through your files and provide conversational, accessible, and verifiable answers based on your content.

How File Connectors work

File Connectors operate at both the organization-wide and personal level. Administrators are able to enable or disable specific connected services at a company level from the Permissions screen in Organization settings.

Once a service is enabled by an admin, every user can connect their own accounts and control which folders and files Perplexity is allowed to access. File limits apply at a user level.

Files synced to a personal repository can only be searched by the individual who synced them—your data stays private and protected. Please note that other users with access to shared Threads will be able to see responses that reference files used in these Threads. However. they will still require permissions on the appropriate connected apps to view the full file contents.

For a more collaborative approach, you can also sync files to shared Spaces. Within a Space, anyone who’s been granted access can search for those files, but seeing the actual contents still depends on having the right permissions set in your original cloud storage. Please note that file limits also apply to Spaces.

What file types are supported?

File Connectors currently support:

  • Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets

  • Microsoft Office files (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, XLS)

  • PDF files

  • CSV files

  • RTF files

  • ODT files

  • Markdown (MD) files

  • JSON files

  • Text (TXT) files

You can sync individual files, multiple files, or entire folders. When selecting a folder, all files within it will be synchronized. Note that adding entire Drives isn't currently supported.

Currently, File Connectors do not support images, audio or video files. However, you can upload these files from local storage to Threads.

File limits

Please note that there are file and size limits when uploading files to Spaces or personal repositories through File Connectors. These limits vary depending on the type of account (Enterprise Pro or Max).

You can learn more about file limits in this article.

Setting File Connectors up

How to activate a File Connector

These steps must be followed by each user in an organization to activate File Connectors enabled by organization admins.

  1. Go to your All settings page and scroll down to the Connectors section

  2. Enable the cloud storage services you want to connect

  3. Authenticate your account for each service

  4. Check for the “Connected” status after successful authentication

  5. To select which files and folders Perplexity should use, click the three dots (⋮) next to the Connector and choose “Upload”

  6. Pick the specific files or folders you wish to sync and confirm your selection

If you don’t see options to enable a File Connector, or if you experience an issue with permissions, your organization admin may have restricted a specific third-party app. Get in touch with us to get help.

Using File Connectors in Your Searches

There are two main ways to leverage your connected files:

  1. As a source for search: Enable files or folders stored in your connected third-party apps as sources when creating a new Thread.

  2. As file attachments: Add specific files from your connected storage as attachments to your queries.

You can explicitly choose when to use files from your third-party storage services as sources for your queries.

Keeping your data secure

How Perplexity keeps your data secure

The content and associated metadata of these files are securely synced to our platform, and we never use them to train our models. Every file you connect stays secure. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit and stored in AWS S3, and all your credentials are encrypted both at rest and in transit, following SOC 2 Type II security standards.

Additionally, your organization is always in control of what gets synced. Admins can restrict specific third-party apps from the Permissions screen in Organization settings.

Other important considerations

  • In order to use files from a connected app on your searches, you must select specific files or folders to sync with Perplexity

  • Your searches will not query files or folders that you have not explicitly selected to use with Perplexity, even if you've successfully connected your online storage.

  • Files are automatically updated whenever changes are made

  • When a file is deleted from the connected third-party app, or when access to it is removed, the file is immediately removed from Perplexity

  • If you disconnect your third-party app account, all synchronized files will be removed from Perplexity

  • Each user can only connect one account per third-party app with their Perplexity account
