About the SharePoint connector
The SharePoint connector enables you to query documents stored in your SharePoint sites directly from Perplexity.
It integrates SharePoint with Perplexity's productivity features, allowing you to instantly search and combine relevant information across your SharePoint files, email, calendar, other connected apps, and the web, without manual searches or context switching.
The SharePoint Connector is available in all our paid plans (Perplexity Pro, Max, Enterprise Pro, and Enterprise Max), but functionality will vary depending on the plan.
Below you'll find an overview of this Connector and how to activate it.
What does the SharePoint connector do?
The SharePoint connector lets you link your SharePoint account to Perplexity's AI Search (Enterprise-only) and Computer.
Once connected, you can:
Search across your synced SharePoint sites and files using natural language questions.
Ask Perplexity to compare documents, extract key information, or summarize content from your files.
Keep your search results up to date, because changes to files in SharePoint automatically sync to Perplexity.
The connector performs two different types of search:
Standard Search: Search across your entire Drive with standard indexing.
High-Precision Search (Enterprise-only): Deep analysis of a limited number of files for comprehensive answers from your documents. Please note that limits apply.
You can use the connector to quickly find information in spreadsheets, presentations, documents, and other supported file types without manually opening each file in SharePoint, streamlining the research, document review, and information retrieval across your entire drive.
When you edit a file in SharePoint, those changes automatically sync to Perplexity, so your searches always use the latest version. If you delete a file from SharePoint or remove access to it, that file is immediately removed from Perplexity.
Additionally, if you disconnect your SharePoint account in Perplexity, all synchronized files for high-precision search will be removed from your personal repository and Spaces, unless you choose to keep them.
Who can use the SharePoint connector?
Perplexity Pro, Max, Enterprise Pro, and Enterprise Max users can use SharePoint with Computer. Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max users can also query SharePoint files in Search mode.
Enterprise users only: Organization admins can control whether SharePoint is enabled for the whole organization. If SharePoint is disabled in your organization's permissions, users won't see the option to connect it in their settings.
Supported file types
Perplexity can read and search the following file types from SharePoint:
Microsoft Office files: DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, XLS
PDF files
CSV files
RTF files
ODT files
Markdown (MD) files
JSON files
Text (TXT) files
The SharePoint connector does not currently support images, audio, and video files. However, you can still upload these file types directly from your device to a Thread.
What apps are supported?
The SharePoint connector is not supported in the Perplexity Windows app, Mac app, or on mobile apps. To use SharePoint with Perplexity, you will need to use Perplexity with a web browser.
Privacy and data security
The SharePoint connector requires the following permissions to function:
Scope | Description |
OpenID Connect
Refresh token support
Read user profile
Read all files
Read/write all files
Read all SharePoint sites
The SharePoint connector respects user permissions, and will only serve a user content they're authorized to see.
If you delete a file from SharePoint or remove access to it, that file is immediately removed from Perplexity.
Additionally, if you disconnect your Microsoft account in Perplexity, you can choose whether you'd like to keep or delete your files. If you keep them, they will stay in your account, but they will no longer synchronize if you make changes to them in SharePoint.
Default vs High-Precision Search
The default search behavior of the Microsoft SharePoint connector uses a direct API integration. This integration uses the OAuth provided by Microsoft, which means that it will always adhere to the file permissions as set in SharePoint. Perplexity does not index your entire drive, and it only gets access to the files returned by the API.
However, if you choose to upload files for high-precision search, we use the API integration to index only the selected files. Default search will still be available for the files you choose not to upload for high-precision search. Please note that Perplexity still adheres to SharePoint file permissions. For example, if access for a file gets revoked and a user that had access to a file no longer has access to it, they will no longer be able to search the file and its contents using Perplexity.

Enterprise-grade Security
Perplexity offers enterprise-grade protections and compliance including SOC 2 Type II certification, end-to-end encryption, strict data privacy measures, and granular user access controls to all Enterprise users. Your SharePoint files are encrypted in transit and at rest in AWS S3.
Perplexity never uses your connected files to train its AI models. Robust safeguards ensure confidentiality and regulatory compliance.
Connecting Perplexity to your SharePoint account is done at a personal level. This means that no one else in your organization is able to query your Drive files. However, if you sync files to a shared Space, anyone with access to that Space will be able to search those files.
To maintain control over how Perplexity interacts with SharePoint, organization admins can enable or disable the connector for all organization users from Organization settings.
How to activate it
To connect SharePoint to Perplexity, follow these steps:
Go to Settings in Perplexity.
Scroll down to the Connectors section.
Find SharePoint and click Enable.
Sign in to your Microsoft account and grant the requested permissions.
Once connected, you’ll see a Configure button next to SharePoint.
After connecting, you can choose which files and folders Perplexity can access for High-Precision Search by clicking Configure and uploading specific files.
Using SharePoint files in Perplexity
Once you have connected Perplexity to SharePoint, you can use your synced files in three main ways:
As a search source
When starting a new Thread, enable SharePoint as a source from Set sources for search. Your synced files will be searched alongside other selected sources (web, academic, other App Connectors, etc.) to provide comprehensive answers.
Alternatively, you can mention @SharePoint when starting a new Thread, and write a search prompt.
As file attachments
In a query, click File Attachments and choose files from your connected SharePoint sites.
You can also sync files synced from SharePoint to Spaces, allowing them to be searched by anyone with access to those Spaces. This enables team high-precision collaboration with shared SharePoint content.
As a source for Computer
When creating a Computer task, you can select SharePoint as a source, so Computer can query your SharePoint files when running the task.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does file syncing work?
By default, the SharePoint connector uses Microsoft's OAuth-based API, so Perplexity only ever sees files that the SharePoint API returns for your account, and it never indexes your entire drive. If you upload specific files for high-precision search, only those chosen files are indexed. Everything else still follows the normal SharePoint search behavior. If you lose access to a file in SharePoint, you also lose access to it in Perplexity search.
What permissions are needed for connecting SharePoint to Perplexity?
Connecting SharePoint requires permissions to read site and file content. Admins may need to grant organization-wide consent to the Perplexity app in Microsoft Entra. If users are still seeing prompts for approval after enabling the connector, double-check permissions both in Microsoft and within Perplexity Organization settings.
What is the maximum number of files I can sync with SharePoint?
The maximum file limit per Space is currently 500 files for Enterprise Pro users and 5,000 files for Enterprise Max users. This includes files synchronized using the SharePoint connector and uploaded through other methods. Each Enterprise Pro user can synchronize up to 15,000 files across all Spaces and personal repository. Enterprise Max users have a total limit of 50,000 files. Once any of these limits are reached, additional files will not sync. Only new files count towards the file limit – changes to files that have already been synced won't count towards your personal, organization, or Space limits.
Who has access to SharePoint files synced with a Perplexity Space?
Files synced to a shared Space are searchable by anyone with access to that Space. However, to open or preview a file's full content, users must have the appropriate SharePoint permissions. Admins can control which users have access to connected services and organizational file repositories.
How is my data secured when using the SharePoint connector?
Perplexity implements industry-standard security practices, including SOC 2 Type II certification, encryption at rest and in transit, and strict access controls. Your organization's files are never used to train our AI models. Only users with explicit Space permissions can access synced content, and only users with the appropriate SharePoint permissions can view the contents of the synced files. You can read more about how Perplexity guarantees your organization's data security in our Trust Center.
Do synced files ever get used to train Perplexity’s models?
No, synced files are never used to train our AI models. All files remain private, only accessible to users with permissions, and are subject to our enterprise-grade security standards. You can read more about how Perplexity guarantees your organization's data security in our Trust Center.
Troubleshooting
I’m having trouble connecting Perplexity to SharePoint. What can I do?
If you're having trouble connecting Perplexity to Microsoft applications, you may need admin consent approval. This article explains how to troubleshoot these issues.
Some users can access the SharePoint connector, but others can’t. Why?
This typically results from permission differences or incomplete admin consent approval. Ensure all intended users have appropriate SharePoint and Perplexity Workspace access. Sometimes changes require the user to log out and back in to refresh permissions.
Why does connecting to SharePoint say "Microsoft is not responding"?
This message can result from several issues, including pending admin consent, permission misconfigurations, authentication timeouts, or Microsoft API disruptions. If you're using our Windows app, you will need to use a web browser to use the SharePoint connector. The issue could also be caused by your web browser or internet connection, so we recommend that you try using a different browser and internet connection. If you've confirmed admin consent and appropriate permissions, and performed basic troubleshooting steps, but you still receive this message, reach out to us so we can investigate further.
My files aren’t syncing, or the sync is stuck. What can I do?
If syncing stalls or only some files appear, try disconnecting and reconnecting SharePoint. If the issue continues, check your file limit, SharePoint permissions, and workspace settings. Try different web browsers (including Incognito mode) and network connections. Files over 50 MB do not sync with Perplexity. If you have larger files, try splitting them into smaller files. If synchronization or upload problems persist across multiple browsers or networks, please report the issue to us with as many details as possible.
I can’t see certain SharePoint Sites when trying to select them in Perplexity
If SharePoint Sites or folders are missing from the site picker, you may not have the necessary permissions to synchronize them with Perplexity. In Microsoft Entra:
Go to Site Settings → Search → make sure that "Allow this site to appear in search results" is set to Yes.
Ensure that the site is in the same geographic region as other sites that do appear.
Additionally, check with the Site or folder owner that you have the necessary SharePoint permissions and are logged into the correct Microsoft account.
Other common issues
If you can't connect or sync SharePoint files, try these steps:
Make sure your organization admin has enabled the SharePoint connector in Organization settings > Permissions.
Check that you have at least read access to the files and folders you're trying to sync.
If you see a "Needs admin approval" message, your Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) admin must grant consent for Perplexity to access your organization's data.
Disconnect and reconnect the SharePoint connector in your settings.
Try using an incognito/private browser window or a different browser.
Ensure the file is under 50 MB and is in a supported format.
If the issue persists, contact us with details and any error messages you see.
