Account Access, Subscription, or Ownership Issues?

Learn who owns a Perplexity account, how email and subscription management work, and steps to resolve account or billing issues.

Who owns a Perplexity account?

The account always belongs to the person who owns the email address used to register it. Your Perplexity account is permanently linked to the email address you provided during sign-up.

What if I change my email or my institution changes its domain?

Once you create a Perplexity account with an email address, you cannot change that email later. To use a different email, you must create a new account. Please note, this new account will not have any of your previous data, including threads and spaces.

If you're still being charged for a subscription tied to an account you can't access or that someone else is using, we can help—but only if you purchased directly from perplexity.ai. Include as many payment details as possible so we can remove your billing information.

If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, you'll need to dispute it with Apple or Google.

What if someone else pays for the subscription?

Paying for a subscription doesn’t make you the owner. Even if your boss, company, or friend covers the bill, the account still belongs to whoever has access to the registered email.

  • You can update who pays for the account, but only the email holder can:

    • Change account details

    • Transfer ownership

    • Cancel or renew subscriptions

Don’t remember which email I used or where my subscription is under?

As the account owner, it is your responsibility to actively monitor the email addresses linked to your account and their associated subscriptions. Losing track of which email you used may result in losing access to your account or subscription. Please note that we are unable to provide refunds for any lost access time.

  • Please note: We will only be able to assist with account recovery if you have a paid or promo account.

  • We are unable to change account emails, we can only transfer subscriptions made directly within Perplexity.

  • Tip: Write down or save which emails you use for signups and subscriptions!

Can I recover data from a lost account or email?

For privacy and security reasons, we cannot restore or retrieve any data from accounts or email addresses that have been lost or are no longer accessible.
Once access to an account is lost, all associated data and conversations remain permanently inaccessible.
