What is memory?
Memory (sometimes referred to as Personal Search) is a feature that allows Perplexity to remember details between your conversations, making your interactions more personalized and efficient. As you engage with Perplexity, it learns your preferences and important information, letting Perplexity serve you with better, more personalized answers to your questions in the future.
Our goal is to give you the best answers possible, and sometimes that means personalizing around what you’ve asked before. We’ll be doing this in two ways:
By referencing
Memories: Memories are preferences, interests and information you share with us that will help Perplexity give more informed responses in the future.By referencing
Search history: In some scenarios it helps to reference past questions, answers and more to give you the most relevant response.
When will you use memory and search history?
Perplexity will call on memory and previous searches depending on the question and whether we think we can share a better response by using these sources. As always, Perplexity will cite any reference that determines the answer we share with you.
How are memories created?
As you ask questions or indicate preferences in Perplexity, we’ll use this information to store key memories (which can always be managed in Settings). This creates a dynamic and evolving memory bank that will help Perplexity provide more contextually appropriate and personalized responses over time. The more questions you ask Perplexity, the more helpful it will become. For example, if you frequently ask questions looking for recipes or restaurants that serve a specific type of cuisine (Italian, Chinese, Mediterranean), Perplexity will remember this preference when recommending recipes or restaurants in the future.
How can I view my memories?
You can view all memories in you account Settings under the Personalize section.
Click on "Manage Memories" to view and delete saved Memories.
Can I remove certain memories or threads from showing up in future answers?
Yes; when you get an answer, referenced memories and previous searches will be shown in the sources. To prevent a source from being used in future searches, you can delete it from the manage memory page in personalization.
Can I turn off referencing memory or search history?
You can toggle referencing memory and search history via your Personalize settings menu. When you turn either off, we’ll stop using memory or previous searches in future answers. To give you the ultimate control of both, the permissions are separated. Turning Memory off does not clear your memories, and neither does deleting a thread in your history.
Memory and previous searches are always off when using incognito mode, and questions asked in incognito are not retained or used in memory ever.
How can I delete my memories?
You can clear any specific memory at any time in settings by clicking on the trash icon (see image above). You can also clear all your memories at once by selecting the clear all button. If you delete a memory, that memory will be removed from the bank in settings and will not be used when responding to conversations moving forward. We may retain a log of cleared memories for up to 30 days for the purposes of safety, debugging, and ensuring memories aren’t re-created immediately after deletion.
Does memory retain sensitive information?
Memory is built with additional layers of privacy and safety in determining what types of information should be remembered and how it should be used.
We’ve taken steps to proactively reduce the ability for memory to retain sensitive information like your health details or financial information - but memory is generated based on a model that favors the frequency of questions asked and information given by the user. We will continue to improve our ability to detect and remove sensitive information, and you can always review and clear your memory bank (as well as provide feedback so we can improve the model’s ability to generate and parse memories). All memory data is encrypted.
Is memory available to Enterprises Pro organizations?
Memory is not yet available to enterprises and organizations.
Are models trained on memories?
We may use content from memory to improve our models for everyone. Your specific data isn't shared with anyone, and if you’d like, you can turn off our ability to use your data by toggling off AI Data Retention (in settings under account).
