About the OneDrive connector
The OneDrive connector lets users securely connect their Microsoft OneDrive files to Perplexity, allowing them to leverage their documents and to ask questions and perform searches using Perplexity's AI search capabilities.
The OneDrive Connector is available in all our paid plans (Perplexity Pro, Max, Enterprise Pro, and Enterprise Max), but functionality will vary depending on the plan.
What does the OneDrive connector do?
The OneDrive connector lets you link your OneDrive account to Perplexity's AI Search (Enterprise-only) and Computer.
Once connected, you can:
Search across your synced OneDrive files using natural language questions.
Ask Perplexity to compare documents, extract key information, or summarize content from your OneDrive files.
Keep your search results up to date, because changes to files in OneDrive automatically sync to Perplexity.
The connector performs two different types of search:
Standard Search: Search across your entire Drive with standard indexing.
High-Precision Search (Enterprise-only): Deep analysis of a limited number of files for comprehensive answers from your documents. Please note that limits apply.
You can use the connector to quickly find information in spreadsheets, presentations, documents, and other supported file types without manually opening each file in OneDrive, streamlining the research, document review, and information retrieval across your entire drive.
When you edit a file in OneDrive, those changes automatically sync to Perplexity, so your searches always use the latest version. If you delete a file from OneDrive or remove access to it, that file is immediately removed from Perplexity. Additionally, if you disconnect your OneDrive account in Perplexity, all synchronized OneDrive files for high-precision search will be removed from your personal repository and Spaces.
Who can use the OneDrive connector?
Perplexity Pro, Max, Enterprise Pro, and Enterprise Max users can use OneDrive with Computer. Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max users can also query OneDrive files in Search mode.
Enterprise users only: Organization admins can control whether OneDrive is enabled for the whole organization. If OneDrive is disabled in your organization's permissions, users won't see the option to connect it in their settings.
Supported file types
Perplexity can read and search the following file types from OneDrive:
Microsoft Office files: DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, XLS
PDF files
CSV files
RTF files
ODT files
Markdown (MD) files
JSON files
Text (TXT) files
The OneDrive connector does not currently support images, audio, and video files. However, you can still upload these file types directly from your device to a Thread.
What apps are supported?
The OneDrive connector is not supported in the Perplexity Windows app, Mac app, or on mobile apps. To use OneDrive with Perplexity, you will need to use Perplexity with a web browser.
Privacy and data security
The OneDrive connector requires the following permissions to function:
Scope | Description |
OpenID Connect
Refresh token support
Read user profile
Read all files
Read/write all files
Note: Perplexity uses these permissions to read and sync your files. The Files.ReadWrite.All permission enables the connector to maintain sync metadata, but Perplexity does not modify your OneDrive file content.
The OneDrive connector respects user permissions, and will only serve a user content they're authorized to see.
If you delete a file from OneDrive or remove access to it, that file is immediately removed from Perplexity.
Additionally, if you disconnect your Microsoft account from Perplexity, you can choose whether you'd like to keep or delete your files. If you keep them, they will stay in your account, but they will no longer synchronize if you make changes to them in OneDrive.
Default vs High-Precision Search
The default search behavior of the Microsoft OneDrive connector uses a direct API integration. This integration uses the OAuth provided by Microsoft, which means that it will always adhere to the file permissions as set in OneDrive. Perplexity does not index your entire drive, and it only gets access to the files returned by the API.
However, if you choose to upload files for high-precision search, we use the API integration to index only the selected files. Default search will still be available for the files you choose not to upload for high-precision search. Please note that Perplexity still adheres to OneDrive's file permissions. For example, if access for a file gets revoked and a user that had access to a file no longer has access to it, they will no longer be able to search the file and its contents using Perplexity.
For more details on how uploaded OneDrive files are protected, see SharePoint and OneDrive Connector file upload security.
Enterprise-grade Security
Perplexity offers enterprise-grade protections and compliance including SOC 2 Type II certification, end-to-end encryption, strict data privacy measures, and granular user access controls to all Enterprise users. Your OneDrive files are encrypted in transit and at rest in AWS S3.
If you're an Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max user, Perplexity never uses your connected files to train its AI models. Robust safeguards ensure confidentiality and regulatory compliance.
Connecting Perplexity to your OneDrive account is done at a personal level. This means that no one else in your organization is able to query your Drive files. However, if you sync files to a shared Space, anyone with access to that Space will be able to search those files.
To maintain control over how Perplexity interacts with OneDrive, organization admins can enable or disable the connector for all organization users from Organization settings.
How to connect OneDrive to Perplexity
To connect OneDrive to Perplexity, follow these steps:
Go to Settings in Perplexity.
Scroll down to the Connectors section.
Find OneDrive and click Enable.
Sign in to your Microsoft account and grant the requested permissions.
Once connected, you’ll see a Connected status next to OneDrive.
After connecting, you can choose which files and folders Perplexity can access for High-Precision Search by clicking Configure and uploading specific files.
Using OneDrive files in searches
Once you have connected Perplexity to OneDrive, you can use your synced files in three main ways:
As a search source
When starting a new Thread, enable OneDrive as a source from Set sources for search. Your synced Drive files will be searched alongside other selected sources (web, academic, other App Connectors, etc.) to provide comprehensive answers.
Alternatively, you can mention @OneDrive when starting a new Thread, and write a search prompt.
As file attachments
In a query, click File Attachments and choose files from your connected OneDrive.
You can also sync files synced from OneDrive to Spaces, allowing them to be searched by anyone with access to those Spaces. This enables team high-precision collaboration with shared OneDrive content.
As a source for Computer
When creating a Computer task, you can select OneDrive as a source, so Computer can query your OneDrive files when running the task.
Troubleshooting
I’m having trouble connecting Perplexity to OneDrive. What can I do?
If you're having trouble connecting Perplexity to Microsoft applications, you may need admin consent approval. This article explains how to troubleshoot these issues.
Some users can access the OneDrive connector, but others can’t. Why?
This typically results from permission differences or incomplete admin consent approval. Ensure all intended users have appropriate OneDrive and Perplexity Workspace access. Sometimes changes require the user to log out and back in to refresh permissions.
Why does connecting to OneDrive say "Microsoft is not responding"?
This message can result from several issues, including pending admin consent, permission misconfigurations, authentication timeouts, or Microsoft API disruptions. If you're using our Windows app, you will need to use a web browser to use the OneDrive connector. The issue could also be caused by your web browser or internet connection, so we recommend that you try using a different browser and internet connection. If you've confirmed admin consent and appropriate permissions, and performed basic troubleshooting steps, but you still receive this message, reach out to us so we can investigate further.
Other common issues
If you can't connect or sync OneDrive files, try these steps:
Make sure your organization admin has enabled the OneDrive connector in Organization settings > Permissions.
Check that you have at least read access to the files and folders you're trying to sync.
If you see a "Needs admin approval" message, your Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) admin must grant consent for Perplexity to access your organization's data.
Disconnect and reconnect the OneDrive connector in your settings.
Try using an incognito/private browser window or a different browser.
Ensure the file is under 50 MB and is in a supported format.
If the issue persists, contact us with details and any error messages you see.
